Introduction
It is easy to question whether or not Skyrim will live up to the hype and praise that it has been subject to for the last few months. It is also easy to question whether or not it lives up to the previous Elder Scrolls game, Oblivion. After going to Gamestop at 9:30 PM and waiting for the midnight release of the game I can most definitely say that it most definitely lives up to the hype and deserves the praise of it's many fans. For those who already know this and have the game, you may realize that there is a new option in the game, to become a werewolf. This article will weight thew pros and cons of both and ultimately say which one I ended up choosing based upon them.
Werewolves
First of all, in order to become a werewolf you need to join and complete quests in the companion's guild (located in Whiterun). When you become a werewolf you get a from called beast form. You can change into beast form whenever you wish (once per day) but it only lasts 150 seconds (although 30 seconds and 50 health can be added by devouring corpses) but below are the pros and cons of being a werewolf (all listed as 'human form' go into effect during both human and beast form),
Pros: Immunity to disease (human form), max health increase (100 points), max stamina increase (100 points), increased speed (faster than horses), wolves treat you as an ally, any crimes you commit as a werewolf do not add to your bounty as a human, you get increased melee damage, improved dexterity (jump a lot farther), and you can get special abilities called howls (there are three, one gives fear to enemies level 25 and below for 30 seconds, one detects life in a large area around your character for 60 seconds, and the last one summons two wolves to fight with you; you get these howls through companion quests).
Cons: You cannot receive a bonus from being rested while in human form, and while you are in werewolf form: you cannot pick up any items (this includes looting corpses), all human form powers, weapons, and armor are unusable in werewolf form and vice versa, you cannot talk, citizens are scared of you (they either flee or attack you on sight), and if anyone sees you transform it is considered a major crime.
Playing as a werewolf: The best part about being a werewolf is the fact that you can still play the game however you want, you just have the added ability of transforming into a werewolf. Play style can vary based on what you plan doing as a werewolf but you are pretty much able to do whatever you want, just be careful of humans seeing you transform in and out of werewolf form.
Vampires
Vampirism; a disease contracted from other vampires; one that must be helped or fed before it gets out of control. You can choose to be one of these blood suckers by allowing yourself to be attacked by one of them until you contract the disease (10% chance each time they use drain life). The vampires in Skyrim are much different than those in Oblivion, but as usual there are four stages of vampirism and the pros and cons differ with each stage.
Pros: Immunity to disease, immunity to poison, illusion spells do more damage (25%), you are harder to detect (only while sneaking; 25%), resistance to frost (25% multiplied by the stage you are at), and there are an array of new vampire powers (vampire's sight allows you to see in dark environments, vampiric drain saps life from your opponent (damage=stage+1), vampire's servant allows you to reanimate a creature for 60 seconds (the higher the stage the stronger the creatures/people you can reanimate), vampire's seduction keeps level 8 and lower enemies from fighting and fleeing, and lastly embrace of shadows allows you to turn invisible for 180 seconds).
Cons: People hate you when you are in stage 4 and will attack you, when outdoors during the day health, magicka, and stamina are all decreased and do not regenerate (15 multiplied by the stage), weakness to fire 25% multiplied by the stage, and you will need to feed on humans to keep on a low stage otherwise you cannot interact with humans (this leads to making your own weapons, armor, and potions.
Playing as a vampire: You should travel at night and explore dungeons during the day. If you plan on being stage four all of the time get used to making your own equipment and you might want to own a house so that you can refill you health during the day (and you will get the rested bonus that werewolves cannot get). Also carry around potions of fire resistance at all times.
Conclusion
After writing this and reviewing all of the pros and cons myself I have decided to become a werwolf because it will not affect my characters play style, I can travel faster, and I can slaughter a town and not get in trouble for it. Hopefully this tutorial helped you make your decision between werewolf and vampire and hopefully you are happy with it (if not both are curable). I will be posting more tutorials about decisions in the world of Skyrim please feel free to comment about anything that you feel needs a tutorial and I will be happy to make it.
- One time I was a werewolf and tried to slaughter windhelm after a guard mocked me. I got triggered turned into a werewolf but was like WTF after I met my first essenstial charechter.
- I supose this was before Dawnguard. After that expansion, I think most of the downsides of being a vampire are clearly improved, and now seems an option as good (if not more) as the werewolf. Sure before the expansion vampirism sucks a ton, but with the vampire lord form it just become a 'God mode with downside'. Of course the downside is the sunlight, so during the day I'll say that werewolves are better, but during night Vampire lord is clearly superior on everything. And more cool too, just look at the screens.. awesome.
- You won't be able to go in the Soul Cairn, idiot. If you didn't pick the vampire way Serena would have offered you two ways to enter since nothing living can enter but you won't be offered that if you picked vamp.
- You can become werepyre. All you have to do is get far enough in the Campanions Questline until Kodlak tells you to go to the Underforge. Then go rescue Serana if you have the Dawnguard DLC and when you take her back to her home(Castle Volkihar) talk to Harkon and become a Vampire Lord. After that fast travel to Whiterun and go to the Underforge at night. Then sleep for 3 days.
- if you are both you loose your vampire seduction power and you cannot complete the vampire quests because you don't have vampire seduction so it kinda sucks
- I enjoy playing as both. I got Dawnguard yesterday so I'm experimenting as a Vampire Lord now. The cons for both werewolves and vampires can easily be avoided, countered or tolerable. (Well that's what I think)
- Wont be a prob wit looting if u have ring of hircine as werewolf.
- People automatically think just because you can't regenerate your vitals in the sun, or having an enhanced weakness to fire means that playing as a vampire sucks. It's a completely different way of playing. If you stay at stages 1-3 you shouldn't have any problems as long as you use enchanted items that enhance your health/stamina/magika regen. Or by enhancing armor that gives you protection against fire. Not to mention that by playing as a dark elf vampire, dark elves naturally have a 50% resistance to fire. It just takes a little bit of thinking and a little tweaking.
- I too had a hard decision between the two, but finally I chose the Werewolf. Very good guide!
- The Werewolf instantly becomes better when you get the ring of Hircine - it practically becomes a 'shout'.
- i love werewolfs a lot i wish i was one
- Pressing the shout button while in Beast Form will create a loud roar that causes (nearly) all humanoid NPC's to flee. This, in my opinion, is the best thing about being a werewolf.
- they cancel each other out. can't be both unfortunately.
- so far i think werewolf is way better i've never been one but as a vampire i can't talk to people when on a quest.(unless i use a calming spell [calming spells cost a lot to cast though) so right now I'm trying to become a werewolf. off your a vampire you can't gain magic/stamina/health while outside in the daytime.
- I was a vampire but i decided to become a werewolf because at stage four vampirism everyone becomes hostile. i loved being a vampire in Oblivion because the worst that will happen at stage four is that you can't talk to anyone. I would be a vampire if you didn't get attacked at stage four. I really wish that they would change this.
- Ok sorry its not really a question then but its still a good point
- Ok I got a question. What if u become a vampire and then get the ring of hircine which allows u to become a werewolf? Then that means u get both perks and u still get resting bonuses. I'm not sure if this'll work but then during the day u turn werewolf and stay werewolf by eating people till its night!
- I have played werewolf before and it is loads of fun! I did not care for vampires in oblivion so I Prob wont make one in Skyrim. But like I said its kick ass to be a werewolf I mean OMG as a vampire if you get mad you can't just run around a corner turn into a huge wolfman then kill half a town then run round corner and come back into town as a human and not be attacked or fined or anything!!!
- werewolf sounds better
- Okay well on this subject i have to say it depends on your character if your a sneaky assassin type vampire is better for you since you get the nightstalkers perk which makes your sneak 25% better each level and then if your a one handed weapons person that will just stand right up to your enemy werewolf is better but if you think both are cool be a vampire at first then when you reach lvl 25 or above then cure your vampirism by doing the blood ritual then your vampirism will be cured and will be a super strong werewolf and the werewolf howl strength determines what level you were at when you turned into one (SPOILER ALERT) if your one of those people that don't like it when people find peace then die sadfully i recommend doing the whole alduin questline before doing the whole companions questline since you'll see the master of the companions in Savengard then when you come back you can't find him so most likely Alduin devours his soul. Hopes this helps everyone decide their choice
- WerewolfWhen u r a vampire u can not even be out in daytimeSure being unable to loot is bad, but that's the only major problem
- Werewolf's are so much better because they are actually part human, and they are not blood sucking demons!!!!!!!!
- Im just saying adding that you cannot pick up things while you are a werewolf is irrelevent because generally you can just wait until you're beast form wears off and then you can go and loot the bodies. As a vampire it just seems like to much work for as much as you have to gain from it and i really don't see how the perks of a vamp are better than the werewolfs. I mean being a vampire kind of seems like medicine in a way, you get some benefits but there are so many side effects that are much worse than the original sickness you had. And if you are any good you should be able to survive without having a buch of perks from either of them anyhow, its just that werewolf form is more of like a panic button to get you out of bad situations that i could not see the vampires getting out of.
- I actually think that being a vampire has a lot more benefits even though the werewolf is strong but you can't open any doors of pick up anything while your a werewolf but as a werewolf you can kill a dragon in about three hits!
- well ant way i played as a vampire worst freaking time ever but of course i didn't know till i went to the temp of mara to talk to marmel and he was sleeping and i went to talk to him and it said feed or talk and appearently i was in level 3 vampirism, so i fed. then i hadn't fed for a while and my housecarl attacked me!!! then i couldn't go into any towns to feed i got attacked every time!!!!!!
- A difficult decision for sure, but, like you, I think the werewolf sounds a little more appealing.
Werewolf
The Dragonborn, regardless of their chosen race, can become a Werewolf in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Although not available in the very beginning of character creation, becoming one is possible when one joins the Companions located in Whiterun. After performing a few quests, the player can choose to partake in a Blood Oath and become a Werewolf like most of the Companion clan.
About Beast Form[edit | edit source]
Skyrim Hybrid
The Beast Form power can be used once a day, and is used just like a shout. Once you become a werewolf, you can never gain rested bonuses from sleep unless you find a cure. As a Werewolf, sprinting is much faster, stamina is greatly increased, and attacks do much more damage. Your claws are your only weapon yet they are extremely useful (although in some kill animations, your mouth can be seen eating the enemy). Power attacks as a Werewolf are used to stun enemies and send them flying. Attacking while sprinting is one of the most powerful attacks in the game, as your werewolf slashes their claws at high speeds. Roaring or howling can also be used to scare certain enemies away in order to make defeating a larger group easier. In order to stall the inevitable transformation back into a human for roughly two minutes, the player can feed on the corpses of its victims in order to remain in Beast Form. This however can be a problem if fighting enemies whose corpses cannot be fed on.
The Ring of Hircine[edit | edit source]
The ring of Hircine is a ring you can get in the quest 'Ill Met by Moonlight' by siding with Sinding and will allow you unlimited transformations for Werewolf Form. In vanilla Skyrim, equipping the ring will instantly start the transformation, while with the Dawnguard DLC wearing the ring of Hircine will give you a power to transform unlimited amounts of time.
Alteration Spells[edit | edit source]
The fleshspells in the magic tree of Alteration like Oakflesh can be used before entering Beast Form to get more armor as the armor effects carry over. The perk from the alteration tree that gives magic resistance and magic absorbance is also kept while entering Beast Form.
Werewolf Totems[edit | edit source]
The Totems of Hircine are totems that can change the different powers that are initiated by the shout button in Beast Form. These can be found by doing radiant companions quests for Aela the Huntress and eventually a quest will be given to you by Aela to retrieve a Totem of Hircine from a radiant location. Divinity original sin 2 system requirements. Upon retrieving it and giving it to Aela she will take it from you and place it in the Underforge where you can activate to change your Beast Form powers. There are a total of three Totems of Hircine.
Cautions When Using Beast Form[edit | edit source]
Before you begin your next Beast Form rampage, you might want to consider some of these warnings:
Skyrim Vampire And Werewolf Move Faster Mod
- You can't pick locked doors.
- Looting dead bodies is disabled.
- You can't access your map, your inventory, or use items.
- In some cases, you may get stuck in small rooms or hallways due to your size.
- Be sure you're fighting enemies that can be fed on for Beast Form extension, and not enemies like ghosts, Falmer, etc.
- If any non-hostile player see you transform (like guards, town people, shop owners, etc) then you will get an automatic 1000 gold bounty.
- If you get a bounty as a werewolf the bounty won't carry over when you transform back into a human.
Dawnguard DLC Werewolves[edit | edit source]
Upon downloading the DLC, Werewolves will gain a perk tree to increase their power with 11 perks in total. Four of these perks require the Totems of Hircine to function though if none are obtained or changed the perk Totem of Terror will still function as you use the howl as a special attack.
